ADVANCING DECOLONIZATION AND LAND-BASED EDUCATION AT SFU

A new film series, Critical Understandings of Land & Water: Unsettling Place at SFU, is led by Faculty of Education associate professor Amy Parent and in collaboration with Jeannie Kerr. The films feature personal stories from Coast Salish Knowledge Holders and allied faculty members in order to bridge the gap between injustices against Indigenous communities and current reconciliation efforts at the university. Comprised of 16 films, the project has evolved to broadly support the learnings of students, faculty, staff and the broader SFU community.

Fingerprint Technologies was the top winner of SFU’s largest annual start-up competition and aims to bring their novel e-bike to market in 2025. There were 53 competing teams from SFU's entrepreneurship community representing students, staff, post-docs, faculty and alumni from seven of eight faculties; projects ranged from not-for-profit social impact organizations to AI-education platforms.

Several SFU community members, including students and alumni, have been recognized for their positive impact and leadership in the province by BC Business magazine. Find out who they are.

BURNABY CAMPUS FILMING NOTICE

A film production company will be working on Burnaby campus between April 25 – May 2, 2024. This will temporarily impact access to portions of North Lot, East Lot and Central Parkade, as well as AQ 3000 hallways, Transportation Centre Rotunda, Convocation Mall and Halpern Lane. Please note that on April 29 & 30 actors will be wearing military-style costumes. Campus Public Safety and RCMP will be supporting access to filming areas during this time.

Allow extra time to find parking and navigate campus during this time, as there will be sections of the parking lots and on-campus areas that are inaccessible. Watch for signs and follow the directions of all security and traffic control personnel.

Between April 25 - May 5, several Burnaby campus food outlets will be closed, including: Mackenzie Cafe, Jugo Juice, Discovery Cafe, Dining Commons and Tim Hortons (WMC). Learn more about updated hours of your favourite food outlets on campus during the inter-term period.

Simplelists, a new SFU-approved tool for managing group email lists, is now available to support business, teaching and research-critical needs. Based on community feedback, particularly from research groups, the tool will ensure group emails continue to be received by internal and external recipients while aligning with industry regulations.

Starting in Summer 2024, SFU will transition faculty, staff and graduate students' mail accounts to Exchange Online, a cloud-based email platform. This change means enhanced protection from cyber threats, better collaboration across the university and seamless integration with other Microsoft 365 tools. The migration will occur in phases to minimize disruption to the academic and work environment. ITS will begin reaching out to groups with additional instructions starting this month.
