EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO SUCCEED

When Molly McVey was a student, she struggled with belonging in the field of engineering. Now, as a lecturer in the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering, she is empowering her students to succeed. McVey’s efforts in investigating and applying student-centered practices have earned her a 2023 Early Career Award in Excellence in Teaching.

 

WHY CAN'T ROBOTS OUTRUN ANIMALS?

Millions of research dollars have been invested in attempts to create a robot that can walk or run as well as an animal. And yet, for Max Donelan as well as other scientists and robotic engineers who have worked for decades in this field, it remains that many animals are capable of feats that would be impossible for robots that exist today.

 

IN MEMORIAM

The School of Criminology is deeply saddened to announce the passing of professor emeritus Robert Gordon on April 25, 2024. Rob was a key figure in shaping the School as it is today and his contributions will be felt for years to come.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE MOVES FORWARD IN APPROVAL PROCESS

The Full Program Proposal for the School of Medicine was approved by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (SCUS) on April 18. See what next steps are ahead in SFU's approval process for the School and other updates.

 

RECONCILI-ACTION ON CAMPUS

The RESPECT program teaches Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism for faculty and staff at SFU. This 11-week hybrid course focuses on skills for engaging with Indigenous community members at SFU and engaging in reconciliation as an institution. Learn alongside a consistent cohort of your peers as you engage in facilitated self-reflection and personal development. New intake for the program is open now, with this cohort beginning May 13.

 

Earlier this year, the BC Labour Relations Board approved an application from the SFU Faculty Association (SFUFA) to transfer 25 APSA members to SFUFA. The university and SFUFA have now begun the process of collective bargaining for these new members. Collective bargaining dates are scheduled throughout May and June and could continue into the Fall if needed. More information will be shared on the Collective Bargaining central hub as it is available.
