Volunteer tutoring at the Native Education College in Vancouver

For over 10 years now faculty and students from SFU and UBC have been providing volunteer tutors to the Native Education College (NEC; https://www.necvancouver.org/) here in Vancouver, helping students there with their math and writing skills.

The NEC provides education for adult learners in a variety of areas. The NEC is a beautiful, wooden, traditionally built structure located near 5th Avenue and Main Street (Mt Pleasant area, a short walk from the Broadway and 2nd Avenue bus routes and close to the Olympic Village and Science World skytrain stations). Both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, have volunteered their time to work with the students and teachers at the NEC over these years. For all parties concerned, NEC students and volunteers, it has been an overwhelmingly satisfying and rewarding experience.

This could be a valuable experience for you and an eye catching line on your CV. You will gain valuable teaching experience by sharing your knowledge with others, but you will also be part of the Native Education College community for, at least, a couple of months.

We are currently in need of volunteer tutors. If you think you could spare a few hours every week or two, or wish to find out more about this opportunity, please contact me (Randall Pyke; rpyke@sfu.ca) and I will be glad to discuss this with you.
