PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP

The workshop served as an international gathering of researchers whose work covers all aspects of second language (L2) speech. It focused primarily on the ways in which people learn to perceive and produce the sound system of a new language, and addressed both theoretical and practical issues. Topics covered included perception and production by L2 learners, L2 speech intelligibility, the perception of foreign-accented speech by native and non-native listeners, computer speech recognition of foreign accents, the effects of computer-based training on L2 speech, the developmental aspects of speech learning, and sociolinguistic issues pertinent to L2 speech. Leading scholars in the field presented their research findings, and participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions about past, current, and future research directions. One important reason for holding this workshop in 2005 was to honour James E. Flege in the year of his retirement. While he will be greatly missed, we wish him the best.
