History
The African & Caribbean Heritage Students' Association is a student organization at Simon Fraser University. We work to initiate and maintain fellowship between students interested in the African and Caribbean cultural heritage and students of African and Caribbean descent.
ACHSA was founded in 1994 as the Association for Black Students. The founding members were eager to bring together students of African Descent in order to promote acceptance of black culture at Simon Fraser University. In the late 90s the organization was re-named the Association for Students of African Descent, thereby acknowledging the growing awareness within the student population regarding the diversity of race and culture in the African Continent. In the summer of 2003 the Association took another bold step towards challenging the myth that concern and color are mutually inclusive. The membership voted to re-name the organization as the African & Caribbean Heritage Students' Association (ACHSA). The new name represents the sentiment that membership is based on interest in the heritage and not exclusive to descent from the regions. Since 1994 the Association has evolved into a student organization whose members represent the collective desire to promote student awareness of the social and political issues significant to African and Caribbean cultures. We hope that you will join us in this endeavor.
