Every time you make a gift, you tell us what is important to you. Whether you support research of local or global significance or create scholarships for students who show leadership in areas you care about, your donations help to define the values and priorities of our community. Through your philanthropy, you help us achieve our vision of becoming Canada’s leading engaged university — thank you.

In 2011/12, your generosity resulted in close to $40 million of new support, more than half of which was directed towards strengthening our programs through academic chairs, professorships and research centres. Attracting high level scholars who motivate students and generate knowledge to benefit society are key elements of our vision. Innovative research programs also provide unique, hands-on learning opportunities that open doors of self-discovery and career development for learners.

A number of you have informed us of planned bequests that will contribute an additional $5,420,000 to the university in future years. What a wonderful way to leave a legacy that will enrich community understanding and benefit students for generations to come.

This report highlights how some of the major gifts made to SFU this year support our commitments to engaging students, engaging research and engaging communities. Gifts of all sizes, however, are integral to the future of the university and the communities we serve, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to every one of you who contributed to SFU this past year.
