ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS Final Reminder: Nominations for Alumni Association Board Members If you're looking for a rewarding volunteer role where you can represent your fellow alumni, advance the future of SFU and the Alumni Association, and strengthen engagement with current and future alumni, we invite you to consider this leadership opportunity. The SFU Alumni Association is seeking nominations for new members of its volunteer Board of Directors. Nominations are due by 4:30pm, Monday, April 16, 2012. [Learn more] Alumni Discounts Available For Love In Public Alumni can receive a $5 discount on tickets to SFU Woodward’s latest cultural production: Love in Public. In a sophisticated blend of music, poetry, theatre and dance the show is a contemporary opera cabaret re-imagining of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese by Vancouver composer David MacIntyre. [Learn more] President Petter Discusses ‘The Making Of An Engaged University’ Alumni are invited to hear SFU President Andrew Petter who will be the featured speaker at the Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon on April 20. He will discuss the challenges and opportunities as SFU positions itself to become Canada's leading engaged university, integrating into and contributing to its surrounding communities. [Learn more] SFU Pipe Band Celebrates 30 Years With Concerts The six-time world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band hopes to wow a hometown crowd with a local performance – the first in more than five years – at Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre April 15 at 2 p.m. On tap are tunes to be featured at the band’s upcoming show at New York City’s Lincoln Center on May 4, which will be recorded as the band’s 11th CD in celebration of the band’s 30th anniversary. The concert provides a glimpse of the technique and artistry that has raised the group to rank within the top three bands worldwide for 14 consecutive years. [Learn more] Tee-Time With SFU's Golf Program SFU’s Golf program proudly presents the 17th Annual Clan Classic on April 30 to support the SFU Varsity Golf Program. The tournament combines two tournament formats into one event, providing an exceptional golf experience for the social and competitive golfer, with additional contests for added entertainment value. The event is the primary fundraiser for the Golf program, providing funds for scholarships and bursaries. Sponsorship opportunities are available that will support the program to ensure the most competitive and deserving student-athletes are able to compete for SFU in the NCAA Div. II. [Learn more] Don’t Delay for Mother’s Day Spoil your Mom this Mother's Day by bringing her to the top of Burnaby mountain to enjoy the Diamond Alumni Centre’s popular annual Mother’s Day Brunch, Sunday, May 13. The decadent buffet features a delicious salad bar, a west coast seafood cascade, chef attended omelet, roast beef and pork loin stations and much, much more! The scenic views will also add an extra-special touch to your meal. Reservations are required and you’re encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment as the three-seatings always sell out. [Learn more] Gather With the Clan May 16th Olympic gold medalists Daniel Igali and Hayley Wickenheiser will headline the panel of celebrity athletes taking part in the 2012 Gathering of the Clan Breakfast. Alumni are invited to attend the third annual fundraiser for athletic scholarships that takes place May 16 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. In its first two years, the event has raised over $500,000 for athletic scholarships, and this year net proceeds from the event will be matched up to $100,000. [Learn more] Join Us For SFU’s Open House 2012! We hope to see you Saturday, May 26 as SFU’s Burnaby campus opens its doors to showcase its spirit and how we’re engaging communities. We encourage you to come and check out this free, fun community event and to bring along your family and friends. The rain or shine schedule includes artistic performances, explorations of new facilities on the mountain, and educational exhibits – like the Faculty of Science’s liquid nitrogen ice cream!
