ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS Introducing Your New Alumni Association Board of DirectorsNearly 700 alumni cast their votes during the online elections for four new positions for the SFU Alumni Association's Board of Directors. We thank all candidates who put their names forward and congratulate the following alumni who have joined the Board to serve the needs and interests of our graduates: Erica Hakonson (MBA ’12), Larry Hayes (BA ’82, incumbent), Tara Knight (BA ’02), and Ali Solehdin (BASc ’01). [Learn more] Join Us For The Launch of SFU Public Square President Andrew Petter invites alumni to celebrate the launch of the University’s latest signature project as The Engaged University, Tuesday, June 19 from 10:30-12:30pm, SFU Woodward’s Atrium. The SFU Public Square project will support SFU’s commitment to engaging students, research and communities and it will serve as BC’s forum for enlightenment and dialogue on key public issues. Come network with community leaders and learn how you can deepen your involvement with SFU’s newest community engagement initiative. Registration required by June 14. [Learn more] Bard on the Beach Night with SFU Alumni Enjoy Shakespeare’s romantic romp, The Taming of the Shrew, with fellow SFU alumni, June 28, 8:00pm at Bard on the Beach. This comic spotlight on the pleasures and perils of the search for a perfect partner will be performed in Bard’s new mainstage tent at Vanier Park. [Learn more] SFU Places High in Global and National Rankings SFU is ranked No. 2 in Canada in two new global ranking systems that assessed universities less than 50 years old. One set of rankings, QS (Quacquarelli Symonds Limited) also rated SFU No. 25 in the world and No. 3 in North America. The other rankings, from Times Higher Education in the U.K., placed SFU No. 30 in the world (tied with Taiwan’s National Sun Yat-Sen University) and No. 7 in North America. In both sets of rankings, SFU placed second in Canada to the University of Calgary. [Learn more] Recognizing Outstanding Alumni July 3rd is the submission deadline for nominations for the 2012 SFU Outstanding Alumni Awards. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary achievements of an SFU graduate. Award categories include: professional, academic, arts & culture, athletics, public service, service to the community, and service to the university. Recipients are honoured at the Awards event in early 2013. [Learn more] 2012 SFU Football Alumni Golf Classic Join SFU Football alumni August 16 for the SFU Football Alumni Golf Classic, hosted by Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. The Tournament package includes green fees, cart, dinner, prizes, on-course contests and programming. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Proceeds will support scholarships for football student athletes a they strive to become NCAA champions on the field and in the classroom. Registration deadline is August 15. [Learn more] SFU Engages Community with Largest Public Event Over 19,000 visited the Burnaby Campus for SFU's 2012 Open House on May 26, making it SFU's largest public event. The campus was buzzing with activities including interactive displays, live entertainment, prizes and food. Guests learned more about SFU's efforts to engage with students, research, and the communities it serves.
