ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS SFU Introduces Academic SamplerInterested in learning something new or updating your knowledge but don’t have the time, money or energy to do a full course? Here’s an affordable way to enhance your skills or learn what’s new in a specific area by taking the university’s credit courses on a non-credit basis. You’ll get the benefits of engaging lectures, informed discussions and lively debates at half the cost and without all the pressure of course deadlines and exams. [Learn more] Keeping the Kids Busy: CJSF Summer Radio Camp! SFU's campus and community radio station, CJSF, is offering their Radio Kids Camp for kids aged 8-12 between August 16 to 20 in their studios on the Burnaby mountain campus. Campers will learn everything from recording sound, editing audio, creating sound effects and even on air radio DJ training among many other activities. Spaces are limited, so register today. [Learn more] Announcing New SFU Aboriginal Alumni GroupSFU's Office for Aboriginal Peoples is reaching out to all SFU Aboriginal alumni to remain connected to SFU. A meeting and information session will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 12:00 - 1:30pm in Saywell Hall 9095 on the Burnaby campus for aboriginal alumni who are interested in forming an SFU Aboriginal Alumni Group. [Learn more] Call for Nominations: SFU Honorary Degree Recipients SFU's Senate Committee on University Honours is placing a call for nominations for a broad range of honorary degree designations to recognize the achievements and contributions of individuals in our community. Nomination deadline is September 13, 2010. [Learn more] A Piping Hot SummerSFU's own current and six-time World Champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band is performing a concert in the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre on Friday, July 9, 2010. The “SFU Pipe Band” is renowned around the world as one of the great pipe bands of all time. Their 2008 concert was a complete sell-out. Don’t miss your chance to see the World Champions at their best. [Learn more] Over $225,000 Raised For Clan Athletics With over 1000 guests attending SFU's inaugural "Gathering of the Clan" fundraising breakfast in the new Vancouver Convention Centre, SFU Athletics raised over $226,800 for student-athlete scholarships. The event will become an ongoing tradition as SFU's varsity teams enter the NCAA Division II this fall. [Learn more] Presidential Legacy Fund Raises over $630,000 Close to 800 people gathered at a gala celebration in June to acknowledge the service of outgoing SFU President Michael Stevenson and his wife, Jan Whitford. In honour of his retirement, the Michael Stevenson Presidential Legacy Fund was created to support graduate student scholarships. More than $630,000 has been raised to date and the fund continues to grow. A video tribute is posted online. [Learn more] Tee-Time! 15th Annual Clan Classic Golf TournamentMark your calendar for this year's upcoming SFU varsity golf team fundraiser tournament. The annual event will be held on Wednesday, July 14th, in tribute to SFU's retiring President, Dr. Michael Stevenson, at the Northview Golf and Country Club on their Ridge Course (previous host of the PGA Air Canada Championship from 1996-2002). The "Texas Scramble" style tournament will be an excellent format for golfers of all skill levels.
