ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS How Square Is Your Thinking? Bring Your Ideas To The Community Summit SFU Public Square, a signature initiative designed to spark, nurture and restore communication connections, is hosting an inaugural Community Summit, September 18 – 23. Events are planned to engage community members in exploring urban isolation and strategies to promote civic connectedness. Featured events include Opening Night at the Orpheum, Big Ideas for Libraries in Communities Challenge, the Alone Together film festival, and more. Volunteers are also needed. [Learn more] Come Together To Help Clean Our Shorelines On Sunday, September 16 we invite you to join the SFU Alumni Association as we participate in the 19th Annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Our group will gather from 10:00am to noon to help clean up Silver Creek at the base of Burnaby Mountain (just east of Broadway and Underhill Ave). If you’re not able to join us at this location or on that day, then we encourage you to locate another site where you can contribute your efforts towards this great cause. [Learn more] The BIG (Career, Volunteer, and Professional School) Fair Returns To SFUSFU Career Services and AIESEC SFU invite you to join us for SFU’s biggest career, education, and volunteer fair of the year. Plan to attend September 17/18 (Surrey campus) or September 19/20 (Burnaby campus) to connect with employers, graduate schools and non-profit organizations. RSVP to receive tips on effectively attending the fairs, to view the list of registered exhibitors, and to win great prizes. [Learn more] Tune In To TEDxSFU Live This Year Add TEDxSFU to your calendar on September 22 and watch the live online presentations by influential Vancouverites from the comfort of your home. This year’s theme focuses on Going Against the Grain, and speakers from diverse fields including arts, technology, science, politics and entertainment will share their stories of standing up and standing out. TEDxSFU is an independently organized spinoff of the international Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conference, and is meant to give imaginative minds a receptive setting to spread their great ideas. Soccer, football and volleyball begin this month and it’s easier than ever to attend a game. Free parking, family fun, and a beer garden are just up the hill at SFU. [Learn more] Call For Nominations: SFU Honorary Degree Recipients SFU’s Senate Committee on University Honours invites members of the community to nominate persons meriting the award of an honorary degree, which is the highest honour conferred by the university. Submit a nomination for a distinguished individual in your community to recognize their scholarly, scientific, or artistic achievement, or to reward their exceptional contribution to the public good through professional or philanthropic activity. Honorary degree recipients' achievements celebrate what the university values and they serve as an inspiration and role model to our students, graduates, and our community. The deadline for submissions is September 17.
