ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS Last Call: Enter The SFU Video Contest Before October 12 Submit an entry into SFU’s Video Contest before October 12 to win some great prizes. Share tips for career success for current students; highlight how SFU Co-op helped you launch your career or the benefits you gained; or share your story about how you’re engaging your community through a rewarding volunteer experience. Capture one of these elements through your phone, camera, webcam, or custom motion graphics or animation - they’ll all be judged in separate categories. [Learn more] Café Scientifique Series Returns to Surrey Alumni have an opportunity once again to engage with SFU health researchers at a series of informal sessions this fall billed as “talks with docs.” The second annual Café Scientifique series includes five new sessions—with topics ranging from Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes to improving how anti-cancer therapies work—designed to connect the community with research on important health-related issues. The cafés are free to the public. The first two sessions will be held at the new Surrey City Centre Public Library, 7-8:30 p.m., Rm. 120. The remaining session locations have yet to be confirmed. [Learn more] SFU Library Hosts Cool Alumni ContestAlumni who engage by entering a contest have the chance to win a pair of tickets to two hot upcoming events which are being presented as part the cool Vancouver Writers Festival: "The State and Fate of this Blue Planet" with environmentalists and authors Tim Flannery and David Suzuki -- OR -- a talk with Jian Ghomeshi, host of CBC Radio One’s Q and author of his just published memoir "1982". [Learn more] Shake It Out on October 18th You’re encouraged to participate in ShakeOut BC, an annual earthquake drill, along with thousands of British Columbians and millions from around the world. On October 18th at 10:18am practice the Drop, Cover, Hold-on earthquake safety technique and take time to make emergency plans with family, friends and colleagues, gather emergency supplies and secure your space at home or work to prevent damage and injuries. If you happen to be near an SFU campus, we’ll have ShakeOut events for you to participate in to be ‘quake-aware’. [Learn more] SFU Alumni Day with the SFU Clan SFU Clan invites you to Alumni Day for the football game against Western Oregon at 2pm, October 20 at SFU’s Terry Fox Field. Mention that you saw this event in our e-newsletter and you’ll be entitled to 50% off regular admission. That’s only $5 per adult and $1 per youth under 18! [Learn more] Teaching Excellence Awards: Call for Nominations Recognize the professors or instructors who you felt went above and beyond to enhance your educational experience at SFU. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Awards for Excellence in Teaching. All continuing full and part-time faculty members (tenured and tenure-track professors, lecturers, and lab instructors) who have taught a minimum of 5 years at Simon Fraser University are eligible for the awards. [Learn more] StudyinBC Contest Invites International Students and Alumni to Share Stories StudyinBC, a resource developed by the BC Council for International Education, has launched a contest that gives participants the chance to share how international students and alumni study, play, and have fun in BC. International students and alumni will have the opportunity to submit a blog post, photo album, or video focused on different themes, such as holidays and festivals, food, tips and advice, sports, studying, and working. Contestants will have the chance to win an iPad3. The contest closes October 31 and winners will be announced on November 5.
