ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS Jump Start Into A Big Future With SFU’s Big (Career) Fair 2011 SFU’s Big Fair brings employers, graduate schools and non-profit organizations to SFU’s Burnaby and Surrey campuses. Presented by SFU Career Services and AIESEC SFU, the Big Fair is an ideal opportunity for alumni to learn about their various options, whether looking for a new job, for a new graduate-school program, or for a volunteer opportunity. RSVP to receive tips on effectively attending the fairs, view the list of registered exhibitors, and to win great prizes. [Learn more] Alumni Encouraged To Join Terry Fox Walk/Run Around The World One of SFU's most notable students was Terry Fox. This year marks thirty years since he lost his life to cancer. Thanks to his legacy of raising funds for cancer research, those who receive a cancer diagnosis today have a much better chance of survival. We encourage alumni across the world to become involved with Terry's cause and join a Terry Fox Walk/Run in your local community. Locations are available globally. [SFU Event] [International Sites] TEDx Comes To SFU This November Organized entirely by SFU student and alumni volunteers, the TEDx brand comes to SFU this fall to promote ideas worth spreading. The TEDx program focuses on bringing people together to spark deep discussion and connection in an intimate setting. Expressions of interest for speakers are currently being collected, and alumni who are interested in potentially presenting are encouraged to apply online. With limited seating capacity of only 100 spots, this will be an intimate gathering of forward thinkers and open minds. [Learn more] Teaching Excellence Awards: Call for Nominations Recognize the professors or instructors who you felt went above and beyond to enhance your educational experience at SFU. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 Awards for Excellence in Teaching. All continuing full and part-time faculty members (tenured and tenure-track professors, lecturers, and lab instructors) who have taught a minimum of 5 years at Simon Fraser University are eligible for the awards. The deadline for submissions is October 15. [Learn more] New Café Scientifique Event Series Launched For The PublicAlumni and the public are invited to join this informative discussion with leading experts from SFU on topics related to health. Café Scientifique is a concept used around the world to describe an informal discussion, rather than a public lecture, between researchers and members of the community. Presented by the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology and the Faculty of Science, and funded by the CIHR. Café Scientifique@Surrey starts off as a five part series being held at 7:30 pm, Central City Brew Pub, at SFU's Surrey campus. [Learn more] SOUL Mentorship SFU Alumni have an opportunity to give back to the SFU community through Young Women in Business (YWiB) SFU’s mentorship program. Supporting Our University Leaders (SOUL) matches female university students with SFU Alumni from various faculty backgrounds. Mentors gain a rewarding experience by providing advice and making an important impact in a young female leader's career and life. Applications are due on September 25th. [Learn more] Calling All Business-Minded Alumni: Your Opportunity To Get Involved If you’re a young entrepreneur, or a successful business individual, SFU’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE-SFU) has a program that may be of interest to you. The 2011 Student Entrepreneur of the Year program aims to inspire business ideas and recognize future business leaders. Workshops and a speaker series will offer tips from industry professionals and provide a platform for networking. Alumni are invited to attend the workshops, consider participating in the annual Entrepreneur of the Year competition, or to serve as a judge or guest speaker.
