ALUMNI & CAMPUS NEWS SFU’s President and Chancellor To Visit Alumni in Montreal and Toronto Alumni are invited to meet SFU's President, Andrew Petter at events in Montreal (Oct 26) and Toronto (Oct 27). President Petter will also be introducing SFU's new Chancellor, Carole Taylor, at the event in Toronto. The President and Chancellor will be sharing the latest University developments and look forward to connecting with our alumni in the area. [Learn more] First Annual Warren Gill Memorial Lecture: Makeshift Metropolis Alumni are invited to the first annual Warren Gill Memorial Lecture on October 17th. Gill, geographer and former vice-president of university relations, was passionately engaged in the cities and neighbourhoods in which he lived and worked. The intent is to continue his questioning, raise new ideas and invoke new ways of thinking about life in the urban context. The 2011 lecture features architect and author Witold Rybcynski, who explores how the 21st-century city is shaped by mixed-use developments, downtown living, heterogeneity, density and liveliness. [Learn more] Duck, Cover and Hold: Shakeout BC SFU will be joining thousands of British Columbians making history along the West Coast of the United States, Central United States, Guam and New Zealand in the largest earthquake drill in the world. At 10:20 a.m. on October 20, 2011, British Columbians will "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" in The Great British Columbia ShakeOut. Alumni are invited to participate remotely and to encourage their colleagues and families to become ‘quake-aware’ in an effort to be prepared for major earthquakes both at home and in the work place. [Event details] [Resources] Alumni invited to view PhD Comics Screening Jorge Cham, the creator of the satirical PhD comic about life as a graduate student, has a movie coming out this fall that will be showcased at all three SFU campuses this month. The film introduces audiences to the unique and funny culture of academia and follows four graduate students as they struggle to find balance between research, teaching and their personal lives with humor and heart. [Trailer and Screening Times] Get Your Cameras Ready: SFU Alumni Association Photo Contest! SFU’s Alumni Association is launching an SFU Alumni Photo Contest later this month and is asking alumni to start thinking about ways to showcase how you are thinking of the world. The contest will be launched through the SFU Alumni Association’s Facebook Fanpage and the top prize includes a $400 gift card generously sponsored by Leader Frames! Focused on bringing forward-thinkers and open-minds together to spark deep discussion and connection in an intimate setting, TEDxSFU is currently seeking applications for the limited seats that are available for audience members. While the event will also be webcast live (and recorded), those in attendance will be directly included in the programming through breakout and interactive question and answer sessions with the presenters. [Learn more] Celebrating SFU Authors - Invitation To Submit Works Published In 2011 The SFU Library is once again hosting its annual event to celebrate and honour SFU faculty, students, staff, alumni and retired university community members who have authored or co-authored a book, or its equivalent, within the past year. The event is an opportunity to encourage academic dialogue and ensure that works by SFU authors are available to the University community through the Library's collection. The Library invites alumni to submit their eligible work to be recognized as part of this celebration. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2012.
