Alumni 40th Anniversary Celebration Wins Gold SFU's Alumni 40th Anniversary Celebration hosted 3,000 graduates and guests on Saturday, October 1, 2005. The fun and festive day was not only a hit with alumni -- it recently won the Prix D'Excellence gold award for Best Alumni Event from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education. Thank you to all our guests, volunteers, sponsors and university staff for helping SFU earn this special honour. The Prix D'Excellence is CCAE's prestigious annual awards program, which recognizes outstanding achievement in alumni relations, public relations, fund development, student recruitment and institutional advancement.Photo at right: Janis Horne, Director Alumni Relations accepts our award. 2. 2006 Alumni Volunteer Awards - Introducing our Winners The Alumni Association congratulates winners of the 2006 Alumni Volunteer Appreciation awards: Jim McArthur, PDP '75, MALS '97 and Kalpna Solanki, BSc '89, MBA '00. Jim McArthur has been a convocation senator at SFU since 1999, serves as an alumni rep at convocation, and volunteers as a moderator for SFU Philosophers' Cafes. Kalpna Solanki served on the Alumni Association board of directors from 2000 - 2006, as president, past-president, and most recently chair of the nominations committee. Diamond Alumni Centre Wins National Chef Award ![]() SFU's Diamond Alumni Centre (DAC) has one of the best university chefs in Canada. Chef Dave Davis recently won a gold medal in a cook-off competition for Chartwells chefs across the country. The competition required chefs to use certain ingredients - including salmon, fiddleheads, pork and rocky road bars - to design and cook a six-course meal. Davis won gold for his creations including tea-smoked salmon with jasmine and lemon cream; a fiddlehead cuppuccino shooter (fiddlehead soup topped with floating cream); sun-dried tomato and panko crust pork loin; and wasabi green tea creme brulee with rocky road crumble. President's 40th Anniversary Award Winners At convocation on June 9, SFU President Michael Stevenson presented 40 individuals with 40th Anniversary Awards for their commitment and service to the university. Their outstanding contributions represent the tremendous network of individuals whose leadership, passion, ideas and resources have helped to shape this great university. These awards are a tribute to everyone that has been part of SFU?s past, present and future, including all of our alumni. Vancouver Recital Society Plays Free Concert at SFU - July 18Bring a picnic and a blanket and savor the stirring sounds of the Vancouver Recital Society in this special outdoor performance. The VRS kicks-off their Summer Combustion festival with this FREE opening concert at SFU's Reflecting Pond in the middle of the AQ (Academic Quadrangle). Enjoy the music of Mozart and Rossini played by the Jupiter String Quartet as you take in the midsummer sunset and glorious views from Burnaby Mountain. Tuesday July 18, 8:00 pm. Upcoming Events SFU Kids Safety Day - July 15 SFU Campus Security hosts parents and children to age 13 at its annual Kids' Safety Day on Saturday, July 15, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm by the reflecting pond in the Academic Quadrangle at SFU's Burnaby campus. The day features fun and educational presentations, games, prizes and more. Kids pre-registered by July 12 receive a free piece of pizza and drink, or register on the day starting at 11:00.
