Board of Directors: roles and responsibilities
A commitment to serve on the Board of Directors carries with it certain responsibilities and expectations, both formal and informal:
- To support the vision and mission of the SFU Alumni Association.
- To keep alumni informed, involved and invested in the alumni community and future of SFU.
- To support the vision and mission of the SFU Alumni Association.
- To keep alumni informed, involved and invested in the alumni community and future of SFU.
- To be an ambassador in the community on behalf of the SFU Alumni Association and Simon Fraser University.
- To attend and actively participate in Board and Committee/Project meetings, the Annual General Meeting, Board planning retreat(s), and Alumni Association events. When unable to attend, Board members are expected to let staff know of their absence. If a Board member misses 3 Board meetings in one year, the Executive may ask that individual to resign.
- To prepare for Board and Committee meetings by reading and understanding the minutes of the previous meeting(s), as well as agenda and materials circulated for prior review.
- To chair or serve on one or more committees, task forces or projects during the year, to report back to the Board on activity, and to fulfill commitments within agreed upon deadlines.
- To be respectful and to build positive relationships with fellow board members, university staff and alumni.
- To be informed of SFU and Alumni Association news and events.
- To participate in Board orientation.
- To support the university financially at a personally appropriate level.
- To inform the Board of opportunities for revenue development, sponsorship, program development and philanthropic support for the university.
- To identify to the Board and University alumni and individuals in the community as potential volunteers and for funding support.
- To exercise loyalty toward the Association and the University and confidentiality regarding their internal affairs as discussed at Board meetings.
- To give feedback when asked, including the annual board survey.
