BA (Women's Studies), 2005
Emma Sutherland drew upon her BA in Women’s Studies from Simon Fraser University and her 20 years’ experience in the field of social recreation and advocacy to found the Red Fox Healthy Living Society in 2006. A registered charity and non-profit organization, Red Fox was created to share Emma’s passion for healthy living with individuals and families in Vancouver’s inner city. She has worked tirelessly to meet her goals of teaching Aboriginal people, people on low incomes and people with disabilities new skills to live healthier and connect with their community. Red Fox helps 15,000 children and families a year become more active, eat healthier, develop leadership skills, and share Aboriginal traditions. Red Fox has been widely recognized for its contribution to members of society who face barriers to healthy living through fitness, recreation, healthy eating and community involvement and leadership. In 2009 Red Fox received the Award of Excellence from the BC Recreation and Parks Association and a Youth Award from the City of Vancouver. In 2012 Red Fox won the Roger Inman Award for Community Economic Development. Now well established in Vancouver, Emma has set her sights on expanding Red Fox to reach more communities across Canada to promote healthy living.
