SFU OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENT (PUBLIC SERVICE), 2013

Mr. Timothy Martin is a leader in international development who combines diplomatic sensitivity and acumen with extensive regional and national engagement in some of the most troubled areas of the world.

His record of international service spans a range of countries and issues including aid and development, environmental concerns, conflict resolution, failed states, multilateral relations, trade, diplomatic relations, and peace and security.

In December 2013 he completed a two year term as the Canadian Ambassador to Colombia, having previously served as Representative of Canada in Afghanistan and as Canadian Ambassador to Argentina and Paraguay. He has been a Director of the Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force Secretariat (START); a body providing Canadian support to fragile states facing natural and human induced crisis.

In 2004 he chaired the Kimberley Process for Conflict on Diamonds where international efforts were made to curtail the illicit trade in diamonds that had financed decades of conflict in Africa. Concurrently he served as the Director of the Peace Building and Human Security Division. He also served as Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and has held positions in the Caribbean, Central America and Africa.

He is a recipient of the Treasury Board’s Award of Excellence in the Public Service for his leadership in Canada’s humanitarian aid to Palestinian children affected by conflict.

His achievements exemplify the transformational international contributions that Canadians have become known for and the global community needs and expects.
