SFU OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENT (PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT), 2013
Mr. Lance Uggla is an exceptional business leader with an innovative mind and entrepreneurial spirit; in ten years he has built a global powerhouse in financial information and services.
After receiving his BBA from SFU in 1985, Lance went on to receive his Masters degree from the London School of Economics and then held a number of positions in the financial sector in Toronto at Wood Gundy, CIBC World Markets and Toronto-Dominion Securities (TD). In 1995 he moved to London to build TD’s global credit trading business transforming the office into a 400-person operation with a $20 billion portfolio. In 2003, Lance left TD to form Markit having spotted a business opportunity to provide much needed transparency around credit default swaps. Lance grew the company from a single product, five person operation run out of a converted barn in the English countryside to an international giant with over 40 products, 3,000 employees and 20 offices worldwide and revenues in 2013 approaching USD 1 billion. Markit helps more than 3,000 customers reduce risk, improve operational efficiency and benefit from enhanced transparency.
Lance fosters an entrepreneurial spirit in the company through shared ownership: over 28 per cent of the company is owned by employees. In 2012 Lance was named the Ernst and Young UK Entrepreneur of the Year and in 2013 he was one of two Canadians shortlisted for the World Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Lance supports a number of charitable causes, primarily focused on giving children a better start in life. Most notably, with his wife, he founded a school in Zambia for street children that today has over 440 pupils.
