BSc (Cmpt), Business Minor, 2002
Chris Neumann: data analytics junkie, bonafide techie, self-proclaimed foodie. What’s missing from this brief summary? Engaged SFU alumnus .
After graduating from SFU with a Bachelor of Science (Computing Science major; Business Administration minor), Chris moved to the Silicon Valley and obtained a Master of Science (Computer Science) from Stanford University. He spent a couple of years at Motorola before moving on to become Aster Data’s first employee. He spent the next five years assuming increased responsibilities (eventually holding several director roles) and helped the company grow to the point that its success caught the attention of Teradata, who acquired Aster Data in 2011.
Having already developed a reputation as someone with high standards of quality and ethics, who could think strategically, execute toward a goal, and provide value, Chris decided that it was the right time to move forward. With the goal of bringing powerful data analytics and visualization to everyone, allowing anyone to understand the data that matter to them, he cofounded DataHero. Under Chris’ leadership, the company has raised just over $4 million to date and brought to market the first SaaS-based data visualization service designed for users of all abilities.
In 2012, I met Chris at a Silicon Valley-based alumni event, and was struck by his enthusiasm in giving back to his alma mater and helping future entrepreneurs. Despite the hours involved in growing DataHero, whenever Chris is in Vancouver, whether on business, visiting family, or coaching at local start-up events, he is diligent in getting in touch with SFU and the Beedie School of Business, eager to know what is happening with entrepreneurship, which faculty representatives he can meet with, and when next he can speak to budding entrepreneurs—sharing his experiences and story of success.
Chris is a wonderful example of an engaged alumnus who is paying it forward.
