Management for Women Program (Continuing Studies), 1984
A graduate of the SFU Management for Women Program, Lis Welch is currently co -Chair of the Campaign Cabinet for SFU's 50th anniversary fundraising campaign, The Power of Engagement. She has been actively involved with the SFU community for many years as a volunteer, including Chair of the SFU Annual Campaign, Chair of the SFU Foundation and Chair of the SFU Wosk Center For Dialogue Council. She received the SFU Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award in 2004, and was just one of 40 BC men and women presented with the SFU President’s 40th Anniversary Award for making a significant difference to SFU during its first 40 years. Ms. Welch and her husband Bruce Welch are prominent SFU donors.
Her long entrepreneurial career in the BC business community includes outstanding professional accomplishments as founder of a retail travel enterprise and with the now 4th generation Welch Group family-owned group of businesses, which currently focuses on forestry but formerly included a major manufacturing enterprise.
Lis gives her time and support to a number of organizations in the community. Industry related, she was a long time board member for the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, BC Chapter. She is a founding board member and past Chair of the Minerva Foundation for BC Women and continues to support the organization as a member of the Patrons Circle Advisory Council. She served as a board member of the Vancouver (now Metro) YWCA and was a founding committee member for the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards event. Ms. Welch served on the boards of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC Chapter, Vancouver Volunteer Center and was a long time Trustee for the Granville Island Trust. She is a member of the board, and secretary, at Vancouver Opera and chaired the VO 50th Anniversary gala events.
Ms. Welch was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Award and Medal in 2012, Business in Vancouver magazine’s 'Influential Women In Business Award’ in 2006 and is a past nominee for the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards.
