BBA (Hons), 2009
Claudia is an inspiring entrepreneur and organizer who has not been afraid to surface important issues for public awareness and debate, even when they may not be initially popular. In 2009, Claudia founded Shark Truth, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to shark and ocean conservation and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Shark Truth has saved nearly 8,000 sharks and counting from being eaten by diverting over 80,000 bowls of shark fin from consumption. Shark Truth was awarded as a Tides Top 10 (2011) for its innovative and real-world impact in environmental change, among many others.
After serving as Executive Director of Shark Truth, Claudia broadened her mandate and co-founded Hua Foundation, a youth-driven non-profit based in Vancouver, Canada dedicated to bringing together the worlds of cultural heritage and social change with an environmental lens. Their mission? To create and support community-based solutions that honour both our individual histories and collective heritage for a better planet and society.
Hua Foundation envisions a world of intercultural harmony where community has come together – united – as true agents of social change. Claudia is also one of Canada’s Global Ashoka Fellows, which means that the work she’s doing with her team at Hua Foundation is something nobody else in the world is doing.
In addition, Claudia is a Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum, and was recognized as one of the Influential Millennials 2012 by Huffington Post Canada.
