Oghenowede  Eyawo

MPH,  2009

Ede is an inspiration not only to students but everyone for his determination, courage and generosity of spirit to help those living with HIV/AIDS. While the story of his miraculous survival following an accident at the age of 9 is remarkable, it must be what he has chosen to do since then that is the bigger story.

After graduating from the University of Benin, Nigeria he completed his first Masters in Graz, Austria, and became fluent in German. From Austria Ede came to SFU and completed his MPH focusing on characterizing the importance and use of HIV drug resistance testing. There was no HIV/AIDS awareness/support group at SFU at the time. Without hesitation Ede and fellow alumnus Adam King established the SFU HIV/AIDS Awareness Network in September 2008. They organized the first World AIDS Day event at SFU, featuring more than 15 local and international organizations and numerous speakers, including the President of the International AIDS Society.

Now a PhD student at SFU with Dr. Robert Hogg as his supervisor, he spends much of his time at the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BCCfE). His doctoral work focuses on long-term survival, comorbidities, and healthcare services utilization for people living with HIV as they age following the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy, as compared to the general BC population. “The priority, I think most would agree, is getting a vaccine, or a cure for HIV,” he says. Ede has an impressive research publication history. He is a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Scholar, a Universities Without Walls Fellow, and a Co-Investigator for a new CIHR funded study (COAST Study) at the BCCfE/FHS.

He hopes to use his skills to serve the African continent someday.

On behalf of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Dr. Hogg in particular, we appreciate Ede for his dedication to searching for solutions through research and supporting those living with HIV/AIDS.
