James Liu

BSc (Health Sciences),  2010

When James first came to SFU, his original goal was to teach science in secondary school. Throughout his first and second year, however, his interest towards humanitarian issues grew as he became more and more involved with the Canadian Red Cross. He was drawn especially to the devastating impact of landmines on civilians around the world, and he worked on various advocacy and public engagement projects. He began to look for a way to merge his interests in humanitarian issues, education, and science. It became clear to him that public health would unite his 3 interests.

Throughout his undergraduate studies in Health Sciences, he became focused on the link between health and vulnerability. He found the Canadian Red Cross to be the perfect organization to simultaneously develop skills, apply his knowledge, and to serve. His involvement led to opportunities such as shaping the organization's youth engagement nationally as well as providing strategic advice to help tailor the work of the organization to best serve vulnerable populations.

After completing his B.Sc. in Health Sciences, he pursued a degree in Medicine at UBC, with the plan to then complete an MPH program in the next 8 years. He believes that his joint background in medicine and public health will allow him to work towards addressing the key determinants affecting vulnerable people in Canada and around the world.

Thank you James for dedicating your career to improving the lives of many by working to change the systems challenging vulnerable people in our societies.
