Kunny Ma

When Kunny began her studies at Simon Fraser University, she knew she needed flexibility to explore different career paths. At the Beedie School of Business, which encourages students to pursue their passion and find their own way and provides real-world experiences and industry connections, Kunny discovered not only who she was but also who she could become.

Kunny began her studies in communications, but after speaking with a recruiter for the Chartered Accountant (CA, now CPA) designation in her second year, her interest in pursuing a designation that is transferrable to many business areas was immediate. She switched her studies to business (accounting) and completed two co-op terms in audit and assurance services, enjoying every moment she spent working among a talented team of professionals, obtaining real-world training.

During this time, Kunny also realized that she wanted to move out East. To make the transition possible, she began building and expanding her professional network and took a third co-op, but this time with a digital marketing agency. In the process, she discovered her love for marketing and brand management. As she puts it, “The rest is history”.

Beedie’s faculty and staff supported Kunny as she made decisions around changing her study areas and career, imparting an important life lesson: successful people rarely get to where they are on their own. With that in mind, combined with a desire to help other young women, Kunny became heavily involved with the Young Women in Business (YWiB) network, a non-profit society for emerging female leaders. Under her leadership, YWiB SFU went on to launch the first student-run mentorship program at SFU.

Since graduation, Kunny has held marketing roles, first as an assistant brand manager with Procter & Gamble, and currently, as an assistant product manager with Lindt & Sprungli, where she leads the implementation and development of marketing strategies for the company’s peak selling seasons.

Kunny also continues to make an impact, but on a much more national, and even global, scale. Her involvement with the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC) began through a summer internship in 2011, which led to a full-time role, and then in November 2013, saw her travel to China to work on establishing a connection between the UNAC and one of UNICEF’s pilot projects.

From communications to accounting to marketing to global citizen. As Kunny explains, “My career used a trial and error approach. It’s a lot easier to switch lanes than start from nothing, especially if it’s early on in your career, so start somewhere”. Her second piece of advice to students? Be curious. “Take the time to talk to as many people as you can about the things that you’re interested in and even in the things that you may not be interested in at the time.” You just never know where that curiosity may take you in life.
