BA (Econ), 1994
Lawrence Yeo (BA 1994) is an international success as the CEO of AsiaBiz Strategy Pte Ltd, a Singapore based management consulting firm. He was challenged by SFU Economics to think across disciplines and has used these skills to expand his international company.
“SFU’s professors’ constant encouragement, intellectual rigor and process of challenging us to question everything and solve problems from multi disciplines” says Yeo who remembers how his SFU experience created a skill kit to view economics and business issues.
Yeo chose to attend SFU pursuing a BA degree in Economics due to “its competitive advantage in offering comprehensive and rigorous programs, strong mix of international student composition and competitive price point”. Yeo describes how he absorbed the academic content which helped build a stronger foundation for his future education and career. “They [professors] encouraged us to question everything” said Lawrence as he went onto clarify, “I’ve learnt to question and analyze business issues from a variety of disciplines, for no one single discipline monopolizes perspectives nor provides the magic ‘silver bullet’ solutions”.
This interdisciplinary curiosity kick-started Yeo’s career as a business consultant who is able to view issues from a holistic perspective. After the completion of his bachelor’s degree, he returned back home to Singapore, as separation from his family roots was too abrupt back then, and job opportunities were more abundant. Shortly after graduation, Yeo was awarded the Arthur D. Little CEO Star Case Award for his outstanding work as a Strategy Consultant. This award was recommended by a London client, Chase Investment Bank, for the results of a South Korean investment feasibility study.
Now as the CEO of AsiaBIZ Strategy Pte Ltd, Yeo works with global corporate clients, spanning the biggest countries in Asia. His firm consults in varied business and marketing strategies, partner evaluation, mergers and acquisitions due diligence, financial analysis, valuation and private equity financing. AsiaBIZ has recently diversified into media and entertainment financing.
Yeo holds many prestigious appointments such as being as International Advisor for the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce & Industry and as Export Expert of Switzerland Global Enterprise, often advising companies’ part of the Board on business strategies.
Although Yeo has been successful in business consulting and directing a growing company, he has always had a passion for academics. In addition to getting Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and Practising Management Consultant (PMC) professional accreditations, Yeo went onto completing his Master Degree in Public Administration (MPA) at the National University of Singapore in 2010. Yeo states “As my consulting firm always had a fair amount of government and public sector clients, I’ve always wondered what were the thought processes that went through their minds if I stepped into their roles, addressing, designing and executing policy issues”.
To this day, Yeo is most proud of his services that create value, either through economic benefits (job creation, export promotion or inward FDI attraction for government projects) or corporate clients’ business growth.
As successful as Yeo has been thus far in his career, he is far from done. He muses “I enjoyed sharing with students what I’ve experienced in commercial work”. In the future, Lawrence will pursue a Ph.D. degree, and plans to share his academic passion by becoming an adjunct lecturer. Future students should look forward to Dr. Yeo’s classes!
