A. John Ellis, O.C., LL.D., O.R.S.

Hon Doctor of Laws,  1992

Dr. Ellis is highly regarded as a former Bank of Montreal Banker, retiring in 1975 as Vice-Chairman of the Board and serving as a Director for 13 years. He is presently an Honorary Director of the Bank.

Dr. Ellis was also instrumental in building Canada relations with European and Asian economies, particularly Japan. Now in his 99th year, during his career years he was Chair or Director of 36 companies and not for profit organizations including Canada Development Corporation ( Now Chairman Emeritus), Chair (now Governor) The Canadian Chamber of Commerce and United Appeals from coast to coast starting in 1946.

He and his late wife traveled world-wide for some 1 million miles on business and cultural pursuits.

For SFU, he served as a Convocation Founder, and member of the first senate. He was also heavily involved with supporting Capital Campaigns for the three BC Universities drive for funds many years ago. This entailed travelling to the major Canadian cities where he knew his way into many Board Rooms.

He continues to connect with SFU through the A. John Ellis Graduate Entrance Scholarships in Business Administration. Each year, 3 to 4 business students at the Beedie School of Business are selected to receive the prestigious Scholarship. In the last few years he has hosted the Scholars for lunch and encouraged them to give back to the community by speaking to residents at Crofton Manor.

He is a terrific business leader and strong supporter of students at SFU.
