Philippe Pasquier
COMPOSING TO A DIFFERENT DRUMMER

By Sharon Proctor
Photography by
Mark Mushet

French-born Philippe Pasquier has been getting lucrative offers from industry (Google, for instance) ever since he received his PhD in artificial intelligence five years ago. And it's no wonder! He stands out in the high-tech crowd, for he's also a recognized composer, musician, performer, producer, artistic director, and educator.

A charter friendship Let's imagine it's 1965. There's a new jewel on Burnaby Mountain. A concrete and glass gem in the rough. Even the massive polished jade stone destined for the reflection pool has not yet got its feet wet. Specifically, it's the month of September. We're thrust into the midst of construction and frenetic activity to register as students.

The SFU Impact
Each of the three campuses is a significant social and economic influence on the community it serves, and together they have a major and growing impact on British Columbia as a whole. Research and teaching activities disseminate knowledge to many publics, while both students and alumni contribute to B.C.'s economic health.

Kelvin Redvers graduated from SFU's film program in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and the undergraduate Gordon Shrum Gold Medal in tow.

But his journey began much earlier. Redvers grew up in Hay River, Northwest Territories, a town with a population of about 3,600, in the middle of nowhere.
