Andrew Petter - enVision SFU
Letter From President Andrew Petter
Photography by Greg Ehlers/TLC

Simon Fraser University is one of Canada's leading comprehensive universities, with deep commitments to undergraduate learning, advanced research, graduate studies, and community betterment.
As president, I believe the time has come to articulate a vision of SFU that embodies these commitments. To that end, I have launched a process called envision>SFU.

The purpose of envision>SFU is to develop a strategic vision that reflects SFU's strengths and enhances its reputation as an institution that is student-centred, research-driven, and community-engaged.
SFU owes its achievements to the energy and hard work of its students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners. These efforts, supported by governments and other funders, have enabled SFU to grow in size and gain in stature.

This spring, I am reaching out to SFU's friends and supporters to seek your help in shaping the future of this university. envision>SFU is intended to provide a forum for you not only to express your views, but also to engage with others, to seek common ground, and to discover synergies that will help SFU direct its efforts where it can enjoy the greatest success.

From this four-month-long engagement process will emerge a strategic vision that will position and guide SFU over the next five years. I encourage you to visit the website www.envision.sfu.ca to learn more. There you will find a discussion document, introductory videos, and 10 key questions for which we are seeking answers. You will also find information about activities, events, and most importantly, how to have your say. You will also find a rich and diverse set of perspectives in the online comments.

So please join the conversation. I look forward to hearing your views and ideas as we work together to envision an exciting future for SFU.

Ten questions to start the conversation:

> What's distinctive about SFU?
> How can SFU be more relevant?
> Is SFU missing opportunities?
> How can SFU improve teaching and learning?
> How can SFU make the student experience even better?
> Can SFU improve the quality and impact of its research?
> How can SFU strengthen its community ties?
> Can SFU get more from the interplay of teaching, research,
and community engagement?
> What other values should SFU's strategic vision reflect?
> How can SFU secure the resources to achieve its goals?

THREE STRENGTHS TO BUILD ON

STUDENT-CENTRED
Our vision will describe an environment that contributes to engaged learning and creates an enriched experience for both undergraduate and graduate students.

RESEARCH-DRIVEN
Our vision will celebrate and support SFU research, through which faculty and student curiosity and creativity contribute to knowledge and to community well-being.

COMMUNITY-ENGAGED
Our vision will acknowledge and promote our dynamic presence in local, national, and international communities, and our engagement with a multiplicity of groups and interests.
