Zoomorpic Vessel

The term zoomorphic means that animal shapes are incorporated into the overall design of a piece and can range from the simple to very complex.

This piece was formed by a coiling technique. This is the only way one can produce the donut shaped body of this piece.

The head, spout and handle would have been formed using a free modeling technique. The exact animal represented by this piece is not known. It may be some type of otter representation.

The pieces function is not known but on the zoomorphic head there is a series of small holes. This may have been used as the pouring area similar to a watering can.

The piece was decorated with a series of white and red lines but have disappeared with time. This may have occurred because of its badly fragmented condition.

The cultural affiliation of this vessel is not known. It was found at Vicus in Peru and dates from 200BC.
