2013 Field School Programs
This summer the Department of Archaeology at SFU will be offering two field school programs in British Columbia Field Archaeology. Both programs will run for the full summer semester (13 weeks) and will include the following courses:
ARCH 433-3: Background to Fieldwork
ARCH 434-3: Archaeological Field Methods, and
ARCH 435-6: Field Practicum
Both programs will begin on-campus (Burnaby, May through early June) with lectures, labs, and exercises designed to prepare students for the field component of the project. In mid-June the field school students will head off to participate in one of the two programs listed below.
Program 1: Don and Lion Islands Historical Archaeology, Richmond BC
This project will focus on mapping and excavations of Japanese fishing camps and a Chinese bunkhouse associated with the Ewan Cannery, which operated on the islands between 1885 and 1930. As this project is situated in Greater Vancouver students will be expected to 'commute' to and from the site on a daily basis (carpooling will be organized prior to beginning fieldwork). In early July the students will also participate in a two or three day road trip throughout southern British Columbia, visiting various archaeological sites and, if possible, touring other ongoing archaeological projects.
Instructors: Bob Muir and Doug Ross
Costs: Tuition, Student Fees, +$500*
*Note: this fee is to offset costs associated with running boats and vehicles during the field school. Students will be reimbursed for any unused portion of this fee.
Program 2: Hartley Bay Community Archaeology, Northwest BC
This project will be based in Hartley Bay, a Gitga'at village at the mouth of Douglas Channel approximately 630km north of Vancouver. The SFU students will work closely with Gitga'at community members over a five-week period (early June to late July), to explore and enhance knowledge about Gitga'at lands and heritage through survey, mapping and archaeological site identification and documentation.
Instructors: Bob Muir and Nyra Chalmer
Costs: Tuition, Student Fees, +$1500**
**Note: This fee will cover costs of airfare to and from Hartley Bay as well as lodgings, and food while in Hartley Bay.
