Supervisor: Dr. David Burley

Research Areas: Ethnoarchaeology, Oceanic prehistory, ceramic analysis, design analysis

Ph.D. Research:

My research consists of an ethnoarchaeological analysis of textile design in Oceania as a means of inferring social interaction in the prehistoric past through relational analogy. Specifically, I will analyze the Lapita design system, the use of which spans 3000 years. Lapita designs are found on the earliest ceramics in the region and are used today for barkcloth decoration. Structural analysis of the design system and subsequent inter- and intra-site comparison of similarity/dissimilarity will illuminate cultural transmission processes and interaction in the present. This information will then be used to infer processes of social interaction in the prehistoric Oceania past.
