MASTERS PROGRAM

The HRM MA program is an online, thesis-based program with an in-person orientation week (orientation is virtual for 2022).

We invite applications from heritage resource management professionals with strong writing and research skills, a commitment to the HRM field, and support from employers for professional development. Applications from citizens of Indigenous and non-Western nations are especially encouraged. The program is designed to be completed in 2 years (6 terms), but students have up to 9 terms to complete.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the University admission requirements as stated in Graduate General Regulations 1.3 in the SFU calendar. Applications to the program will be accepted from candidates who:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, planning, or a related field;
  • Obtained a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0;
  • Professional experience working in heritage resource management or a related field, including at least some experience in lab work, field work, planning and consultation, and project and budget management. 1-2 years of professional employment are recommended.

The archaeology graduate admissions committee may offer, at its discretion, MA admission to exceptional students without an undergraduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field. Minimally we require demonstrated competence in field archaeology or a cognate domain of professional practice in heritage resource management.

Students who do not have the proper background in heritage resource management are advised to obtain this background through participation in heritage resource management activities and programs, especially heritage site identification, significance assessment, and impact avoidance or reduction.

We welcome inquiries about program eligibility. Please contact Adam N. Rorabaugh (adam_n_rorabaugh@sfu.ca), HRM Program Director with any questions.

Tuition Costs

Tuition is per term, rather than per course or credit hour. The total Program tuition and fees are distributed evenly across the six terms, with modest annual increases (~2%) to keep pace with inflation.

For 2022 entrants:

$4,880.00* CAD (per term). $29,280 (total tuition).
*Estimated 2% fee increase.

For 2021 entrants:

$4,784.00 CAD (per term). $28,704 (total tuition).

For 2020 entrants:

$4,689.96 CAD (per term). $28,139.76 (total tuition).

Students who complete the coursework and require additional terms beyond the Program’s six terms must pay continuing registration fees equal to ~50% of the per-term tuition. Enrollment in the HRM Program is considered "off campus" which reduces some fees, and if you choose you may opt out of additional fees such as the UPass (those not within the Lower Mainland of BC) and the Graduate Student Health Plan.
