Clean energy act creates nightmare
The provincial government’s introduction of the Clean Energy Act on the heels of approving the Site C Dam project has energy experts charging the government with misleading the public about its commitment to energy self-sufficiency. SFU public policy expert John Calvert says, “The new act will greatly increase the push to privatize B.C.’s rivers and streams for the purpose of export, which is not what the government earlier said. The act will also lead to the imposition of a huge financial burden on ratepayers.”

The laser, 50 years later
Leading experts will gather at SFU’s Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver May 15 – 16 to compare notes on how the laser has impacted the world since its inception 50 years ago, and to celebrate the life of its creator, Theodore Maiman. SFU engineering science professor Andrew Rawicz knew Maiman well and worked with him to design courses at SFU in bioptics and optical engineering. Maiman was an adjunct professor at SFU after moving from California to Vancouver. He died in 2007. His creation – the world’s first operational laser – will be demonstrated at the end of the symposium. For more information or to participate (there is some space still available) check http://fas.sfu.ca/MaimanLaserSymposium/about.html
