Beefing up retirement savings
Led by federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, provincial finance ministers across Canada have put on hold negotiations on improving the Canada Pension Plan until mid-2011. SFU public policy analyst Jon Kesselman writes and speaks publicly on this issue. He can comment on the delay and the ministers’ immediate movement on creating a voluntary private-sector retirement savings plan.

Winter weather strands travellers
Thousands of holiday travellers remain stranded as harsh winter conditions wreak havoc with airports in North America and Europe. Heathrow Airport, a major transportation hub, has an immense backlog of cancelled flights. SFU clinical psychologist Joti Samra can talk about what people are going through as they face the reality they may not make it home in time for Christmas. "The holiday season is an extremely stressful time for many people -- family stressors, financial concerns, and elevated rates of mood issues contribute. The unpredictability and lack of control that accompanies being stranded in an airport at this time of year only further compounds existing stressors," Samra says.
