Toronto hit with 5.5 earthquake
Although earthquakes that register 5.5 on the Richter scale are less common in Eastern Canada than they are on the West Coast, John Clague says today’s rumble in Southern Ontario and Quebec was in a known earthquake hot spot. An expert on natural hazards, including earthquakes, Clague can shed some light on the quake’s significance.

Obama fires top general
Negative comments about the U.S. president made by the commander of the country’s allied mission in Afghanistan have raised a storm of controversy – and have cost the commander his job. News reports say General Stanley McChrystal has been fired for his remarks in Rolling Stone Magazine. “It’s a very unusual situation, to have someone high up in government or the military make negative public announcements about the president,” says SFU professor Andre Gerolymatos. SFU political scientist Alex Moens, who studies U.S. politics and presidents, is also following the story and can provide comment.

CSIS director warns of government spies
Now why would CSIS go public with its monitoring of two provinces, including B.C., for catering to foreign influence rather than stay mum or make arrests? SFU terrorism experts Andre Gerolymatos and Stuart Farson could help solve this political puzzle.
