Monitoring Egypt
With the military having suspended Egypt’s constitution and taken over rule after President Hosni Mubarak’s departure, Egyptian Canadian and SFU historian Paul Sedra is watching with fascination. “Quite frankly, I have significant concerns about the military deciding to ban strikes as this was a major expression of rising civic spirit in Egypt,” says Sedra. An Egyptian woman who is a graduate student in SFU’s School of Public Policy, Mary Gerges, is also following closely the developments in Egypt and can comment.

Analyzing Islam
On the heels of Tariq Ramadan’s opening of the Spring 2011 Lecture Series co-hosted by the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMS), another widely respected voice on Islam will take the lectern. Vancouver Sun columnist Douglas Todd recently referred to Graham Fuller as the voice that “…offers perhaps the most penetrating analysis of what is going on in Egypt and elsewhere in regards to political Islam.” Fuller, an SFU adjunct professor of history and a former senior political scientist at RAND, will present Reflections on a World Without Islam, based on his book of the same name. SFU’s Hellenic Studies is co-hosting the lecture, which takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at SFU’s Vancouver campus.

Liberal flash and then dash
B.C. Liberal politicians return to the legislature today to make a throne speech this afternoon and then bring in a budget tomorrow but then the session quickly comes to an end on Thursday. Various SFU political science, public policy and political marketing experts can comment on the Liberals need to make political haste to get ready for their election of a new leader and premier on Feb. 26, including Doug McArthur and political marketing expert Gary Mauser.
