Two SFU students and one grad hope their daring personal video testimonials about mental illness will help entrench awareness of the disease, which was acknowledged nationally during Mental Health Awareness Week in Canada last week. In their YouTube testimonials, Brent Seal, Joe Roback and Taylor Kagel talk about how changing the face of mental illness is helping them live with the disease. Elliot Goldner, an SFU health sciences professor and expert on mental illness, says, “The students are helping to de-mystify mental health problems and get rid of the stigma that has previously hampered recovery and full participation by so many people in society.” Goldner can also comment on an upcoming national conference in Winnipeg (May 13-15) exploring collaborative mental health care.
