Women’s Day evokes enduring inequities
The Canadian government will mark the 99th anniversary of International Women's Day on March 8 with the theme: Strong Women. Strong Canada. Strong World. But almost a century later, women still represent 70 per cent of the world's poor, 70 per cent of civilian war deaths, and earn only 10 per cent of the world’s income despite doing 66 per cent of the work. Catherine Murray chairs SFU’s gender, sexuality, and women's studies department and is a professor in the School of Communication. She can speak about the significance of International Women's Day and the struggles for women’s equality nationally and globally since the first event in 1911, which has grown into a weeklong series of activities across Canada. Marjorie Griffin Cohen, a political science professor and past chair of women’s studies, can also comment.
Catherine Murray, 778.782.5526, 604.838.5272 (on March 5); murraye@sfu.ca
Marjorie Griffin Cohen, 778.782.5838 (available only by email until March 8); mcohen@sfu.ca
Who on earth do we think we are?
Ruth Ozeki, an award-winning Japanese-American-Canadian novelist and filmmaker whose novels focus on global environmental and health issues will talk and read from her latest work at a free event on Monday, Mar. 8, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Public Library. Her previous novels include My Year of Meats and All Over Creation, which looks at love, potatoes and the hazards of modern factory farming. SFU’s World Literature Program is sponsoring her visit. Comparative literature assistant professor Melek Ortabasi, an assistant professor in the program, will moderate the event and can talk about the impact of Ozeki’s work.
