Awash in green
A new study finds that almost all green products make one “false, misleading or unproven” environmental claim. And research by Ottawa-based environmental marketing firm TerraChoice didn’t find a single green child’s toy that was free of ‘greenwashing’ – the act of misleading consumers about the environmental practices of a company. The findings, following a probe of more than 5,000 products, are of little surprise to SFU marketing expert Lindsay Meredith, who says the trend could easily become “a quick way to run your brand.”

New tech solutions for chronic pain
As researchers work to better understand chronic pain, new technologies are emerging as additional tools for addressing its challenges. Diane Gromala, an associate professor in SFU Surrey’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology, and a Canada Research Chair, studies how technology can help those living with chronic pain. Among her studies is the role of immersive virtual reality, proven to be more effective than opiods, used for thousands of years, to alleviate some forms of pain. She’ll talk about pain and the promise of emerging technology – from biomedical devices to visualization – on Thursday, Oct. 28 at SFU’s Burnaby campus, (Applied Sciences Building, rm 10900) 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Beyond Pain is part of the Canada Research Chair lecture series.

Game creation draws high school students
This month, SFU’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) has been hosting game development camps for local high school students, offering exposure to the world of game development and interactive storytelling. A graduation event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2-4 p.m. at the SFU Surrey campus, where the nearly 30 newly graduated designers will show off their creative games in a mass display.
