The Chief Electoral Officer’s refusal to forward the successful anti-HST campaign results to a special legislative committee may mean check in Bill Vander Zalm’s political chess game, but it is not checkmate. SFU political policy analyst Doug MacArthur says: “The officer’s decision is clearly contrary to the intent and the wording of government rules, since they give him no power to sit on a successful petition under any circumstances… Since he has exceeded his authority, there will no doubt be a court challenge of his decision.” MacArthur predicts that the government will be forced to take the removal of the HST to the legislature as a government bill, “which gives them little choice but to support the bill or defeat it and face an election.”
