Putting Islam in Perspective
SFU adjunct history professor Graham Fuller is the second speaker in a lecture series co-hosted by SFU’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMSC) and Hellenic Studies. Fuller will deliver his presentation, based on his latest book, A World Without Islam, on Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m. at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus.

Following the presentation, Vancouver Sun journalist Douglas Todd will chair a roundtable discussion featuring experts in the field: SFU history professors Paul Sedra, Dimitrios Krallis, and Derryl MacLean, and SFU international studies professor John Harriss.

Fuller, a prolific author of books about Islam and Middle Eastern politics, is a former chair of the National Intelligence Council of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the U.S, and also formerly a senior political scientist at Research and Development (RAND), a non-profit global think tank. A book signing and sale of A World Without Islam will conclude the event.

Reflections on Egypt
SFU School of Public Policy professor Doug McArthur is moderating a panel discussion about the unraveling of Egypt’s political regime and who may wind up holding the reins of power. The discussion, which features three young Egyptian panelists, takes place Feb. 21, 7 p.m., at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus. The panelists are: Mary Gerges, an SFU public policy graduate student who belongs to a persecuted faith in Egypt; Eiman Raouf, a university graduate whose grandfather was a general in Egypt’s police force; and Andrew Dawoud, a social media activist who has been tracking protesters’ social media use in Egypt. The panelists will reflect on many questions related to Egypt’s future from the point of view of youth who understand the mindset of their peers in Egypt. Via Skype, the panelists will get a live update from people in Egypt on the country’s current situation.
