Study tracks risk-takers
The Canadian Avalanche Centre’s special warning continues this week as the avalanche threat across B.C. remains high. Some areas could be elevated to extreme as the weather begins a warming shift. Pascal Haegeli, a post doctoral fellow in SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management, is studying the habits of those who take risks and can talk about why thrill seekers continue to cross into dangerous territory – even after a season of tragic deaths. He is also developing and testing decision aids for those who travel in avalanche terrain. Meanwhile earth sciences professor John Clague can talk about how various factors are combining to push up B.C.’s avalanche-related death toll.
