Thousands feared dead in Haiti earthquake
Emergency crews, charities and the federal government are coordinating Canada’s efforts to help with the rescue operation in Haiti after it was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake yesterday, with thousands feared dead in the capital Port au Prince. SFU earth scientist John Clague is a Canada Research Chair in natural hazard research and one of Canada’s leading authorities on earthquakes. He can comment on the cause and effects of the quake. John Richards, an SFU public policy professor and the author of an influential study on Canada’s aid effectiveness, can comment on the magnitude of foreign aid needed in a catastrophic situation such as this one.
