The B.C. Court of Appeal’s dismissal of the federal government’s attempt to shut down Vancouver’s supervised injection site in the Downtown Eastside is drawing thumbs up from SFU criminologist Neil Boyd. The co-author of a new book that advocates far-reaching changes to address homelessness and drug addiction, Boyd says, “The problems of drug use are best understood as public health problems… and not problems for the criminal law.” Boyd, who has also recently completed research with SFU health scientist Benedikt Fischer indicating that injection sites don’t increase neighbourhood crime, can talk further about today’s court decision.
