Apple’s latest gadget
The secret’s out – Apple’s latest gadget is the iPad, described as a being “more intimate than a laptop and more capable than a smart phone.” It’s also expected to be better at web surfing than a laptop. Will it catch on, and what will it do for users? SFU communication professors Peter Chow-White and Richard Smith are following the story and can provide comment.

Landlords help homeless
As people worldwide prepare to make Vancouver their new home during the 2010 Winter Olympics, landlords are opening up their doors to the city’s homeless, mentally ill people. Landlords are lining up to help participants in Canada’s first, housing-first national initiative to help homeless, mentally ill people. SFU health scientist Julian Somers is the leader of the Vancouver component of At Home/Chez Soi. The national initiative is exploring whether addressing housing before treatment needs will improve the fate of homeless, mentally ill people. Somers says 60 per cent of the 100 participants recruited so far in Vancouver are eligible for housing financed by the national initiative. “We’ve had no trouble placing these people in housing thanks to the large network of landlords working with us," says Somers. “Landlords see these tenants are coming with considerable resources designed to promote their success.”
