Coalition seeks budget amendment
The federal budget is poised to pass following the announcement by Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff that the coalition of opposition parties will seek an amendment requiring the government to provide detailed reports of spending. SFU political science professor Patrick Smith expects Ignatieff in the short term to diffuse any appearance of being “towed along in the Harper wake.” Adds Smith: “Harper will still be prime minister on Labour Day.”

Assessing the impact of a stimulus plan

SFU political economist Marjorie Griffin Cohen can assess the measures outlined in the government’s new stimulus plan. Griffin Cohen is a principal investigator with the Economic Security Project, a platform for the analysis of policy changes and their effect on vulnerable populations. Next month (Feb. 10), she will address the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences Breakfast on Parliament Hill, attended by MPs, senators and senior policy makers. She’ll talk on the economic downturn and choices faced by government to improve economic security.
