A group of academics has written an open letter to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the education ministry calling for the continuation of evaluating core academic skills (in Grades 4 and 7), and urging the two sides to meet and negotiate potential improvements to the controversial Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA)  process. The Labour Relations Board has told the BCTF to administer the tests. Teachers say the data is used unfairly by the Fraser Institute. SFU public policy professor John Richards is among signatories and can talk about the range of research using FSA data - which the academics suggest is "perhaps the best elementary education data in Canada."
