Obama visits Canada
President Barack Obama is restoring the presidential tradition of making Canada his first foreign visit - a welcome gesture and a token of good executive relations to come, says SFU political science professor Alexander Moens, who studies Canada-U.S. relations and the U.S. presidency. Moens predicts the Feb. 19 visit will concentrate on economic turmoil, the countries’ shared objectives in Afghanistan, and how trade, energy and environmental measures are tightly interwoven in their relationship. Moens says Prime Minister Harper acted “pragmatically and constructively” in a bid to neutralize the president’s ‘Buy American’ provision in its stimulus bill. Key to Thursday’s meeting will be the development of personal friendship and trust, Moens adds.

Canadians for Obama take up community service
While Obama is in Ottawa on Feb. 19 a group of university students will be at work painting facilities at the Centre of Integration for African Immigrants (CIAI) in New Westminster – taking up Obama’s call to embrace community service as a way to create a better society. SFU health sciences student Benjamin Lee says the local group, Canadians for Obama, will participate in a volunteer event every month. “We’re not observers or cheerleaders by any means – our goal is to take up the call to service, politically engage youth in the political process and work towards having a voice when it comes to policy development,” says Lee, who spent five days last fall volunteering for Obama’s campaign.
