Ready for swine flu’s next move
Health officials worldwide are worrying about swine flu’s unpredictable severity, especially given its rapid spread. But SFU’s Stephen Corber says public health decision makers globally are much better prepared to deal with this virus’ spread then they were with SARS. Corber, director of the SFU Faculty of Health Sciences’ Public Health Practice, can talk about why he gives public health officials high marks for their current level of preparedness for the swine flu virus’ next move.
Ralph Pantophlet, an SFU health sciences assistant professor with expertise in vaccine development, can talk about the similarities and differences between this influenza outbreak and previous ones. He can also address the critical decision-making that goes into developing an effective vaccine and implementing it at the right time.

Tourism in the wake of a health scare
Mexico has become a marked destination with the outbreak of the deadly swine flu, but that hasn’t stopped many travellers from heading to the holiday destination. However Peter Williams, director of SFU’s centre for tourism research and policy, expects the illness will have a significant impact on travel to the country. He can provide comment on health concerns and their implications for tourism, based on studies of the results of past health “scares”, including SARS. He can also talk about the role of tourism in spreading the illness.
