Graduating under sunny skies
SFU’s spring Convocation ceremonies will be draped in sunshine as graduands make their colourful processions into Convocation Mall June 2 – 5. Ceremonies begin Tuesday (2:30 p.m.) and will follow each day at 9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Five honorary degrees will be conferred during the ceremonies – on BCIT river conservationist Mark Angelo, architect Richard Henriquez, broadcaster Rafe Mair, philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian and biomedical engineer James McEwen. First Nations graduates celebrate
Eighteen students from several First Nations communities will be recognized on Wednesday, June 3 at a graduate honouring feast, including three who are receiving their Master of Education degrees. The ceremony begins with a salmon feast at 5 p.m. and will feature traditional drumming (by the Squamish Eagle Song Dancers). Graduates will receive a Gah-diklh (woven blue, white and red sash) made by Wit’suwit’en elders. SFU President Michael Stevenson, representatives of the First Nations communities and graduates will speak.

Doctoral grad advances mobile TV
ChengHsin Hsu dreams of the day when his passion for designing computer networks fires up television broadcasting systems driven by BlackBerrys, iPhones and other portable personal communication devices. His thesis and award-winning prototypes of mobile TV base stations and receivers have earned him an SFU doctorate in computing sciences. “Growing interest in multimedia communication and streaming video over wireless media means that mobile TV will become the most popular application on portable wireless devices.”

SFU health sciences professor Robert Hogg will be in the applauding crowd at Convocation on the morning of June 3 – not for a graduating offspring, but for his own mom. After more than 30 years of studies in history and other courses Denise Hogg earns a Bachelor of General Studies and her family’s pride.
